PREVENTIVE MEASURES OF SALMONELLOSIS
Loh In-Kyu

Abstract
Salmonellosis is an important bacterial zoonosis. Animals that have been known to act as reservoirs or sources of infection to man are cattle, pigs, sheep, goats, horses, dogs, cats, foxes, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, wild birds, penguins, baboons, monkeys, rats, mice and various reptiles. Human cases and carriers may also act as the reservoirs. The majority of Salmonella infections occur when contaminated animal foods are ingested by susceptible persons.
The following measures are considerable to be practiced for the prevention and control of salmonellosis:
1) Adequate cooking or heat treatment of animal feeds and other measures to avoid them from Salmonella contamination.
2) Detection and isolation of infected animals from the herd with the adequate treatment of the infected and disinfection of their feces and soiled environment therewith.
3) Vaccination of calves with a live avirulent vaccine prepared from a strain of S. dublin before contact with the herd.
4) Exclusion of infected persons from food handling and concurrent disinfection of their feces and of articles soiled therewith.
5) Meat and poultry inspection, with adequate supervision of abattoirs and butcher shops.
6) Thorough cooking of all foodstuffs derived from animal sources-meat and eggs. Avoid. recontamination within kitchen after cooking is completed. Avoid raw egg eating. Refrigerate raw and prepared foods during storage before use.
7) Pasteurize egg products and milk.
8) Education of food handlers and housewives in the necessity of washing hands before food preparation.
9) Protection of food against rodent or insect contamination.
10) Avoid contact with infected animals and patients. Culture all the contacts. 11) Restrict the use of antibiotics for treatment.
12) Improvement of general environmental sanitation-feces and sewage disposal, water purification, rodent and insect control, etc.
13) Conduct a quick epidemiologic investigation in an epidemic outbreak to search for the source and origin of the infection.
